Republican Sen. Ted Cruz spoke against the adoption of critical race theory in the educational system, calling it “racist” and “evil.”
“Critical race theory is bigoted, it is a lie, and it is every bit as racist as the klansmen in white sheets,” Cruz said to a crowd Friday at the Faith and Freedom Coalition.
Critical race theory has been adopted by some school districts across the country, spurring debates about its premise. CRT, as it is more popularly abbreviated, was made popular by the 1619 Project from the New York Times.
“Now what is critical race theory?” Cruz asked, telling an account of earlier in the week when a reporter asked him about the controversial curriculum. “I said, well, it’s a theory that derives from Marxism. Karl Marx viewed the entire world as a conflict between classes, between the owners of capital and the working men and women, the proletariat — a fundamental battle in society.”
“Critical race theory takes that same Marxist concept, except it replaces class with race,” the senator continued. “It says all of America and all of the world is a battle between the races.”
“Critical race theory says every white person is a racist. Critical race theory says America is fundamentally and irredeemably racist. Critical race theory seeks to turn us against each other and, if someone has different colored skin, seeks to make us hate that person,” Cruz exclaimed.
“As a Christian and as an American, I love my brothers and sisters whatever skin color you are, whatever ethnicity you are, whatever faith you are, whatever creed you are — we are commanded to love. Period. The end,” he added, followed by applause from the crowd.
“It is evil,” Cruz concluded.
As debate surrounding CRT continues to rage across the country, a new poll shows it is widely unfavorable.
A majority, at 58%, expressed an unfavorable view of critical race theory, while 38% expressed a favorable view, according to the results of a YouGov/Economist poll released earlier this week.
Cruz was joined at the event by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has been a frequent critic of CRT and even vowed to ban it in his state.
“Critical race theory is basically teaching people to hate our country, hate each other,” DeSantis said. “It’s divisive, and it’s basically an identity politics version of Marxism.”
